Its deterioration during natural aging is influenced by various factors, e.g. composition of material itself, time, temperature, humidity, quality of the environment, etc. Study of the degradation processes is very important for development of paper conservation techniques. The aim of this research was to study the changes of saccharides (glucose, xylose, galactose, arabinose and mannose), lignin, ash content and pH value of historical paper documents from the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century. Saccharides, ash and lignin were analysed by following the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) procedures, pH and grammage according to Slovak Technical Standards (STN). The samples from the 18th, 19th (up to 1859) and 21st century had a pH from slightly acidic to alkaline values, the samples from the second half of the 19th century and from 20th century were more acidic. In older papers was also primarily detected the most durable saccharide of D-glucose.
