AnotáciaThe performance of self-healing and standard coating systems on oak wood exposed to natural weathering for two years is investigated in the paper. The changes in coating thickness, colour coordinates L*, a*, b*, total colour difference ΔE*ab, impact resistance, and adhesion by Pull-off and Cross-cut tests are evaluated in the study. The results show that while both coating system types displayed slight colour alterations, the self-healing coating system containing microcapsules exhibited more colour stability, maintaining a colour difference (ΔE*ab) of 2.6. The primary factors contributing to colour change were variations in lightness (L*) and, to a* lesser degree, the b* coordinate leading to subtle darkening and yellowing of the coatings. However, the self-healing coating system exhibited lower impact resistance indicating increased brittleness and susceptibility to cracking corresponding to the standard coating system. Regarding adhesion, the self-healing coating system showed no changes after weathering, as measured by the Pull-off and Cross-cut tests. In contrast, the standard coating system experienced a 32% reduction in adhesion in the Pull-off test. These findings suggest that although self-healing coatings may offer advantages in colour retention, their application on exterior wood surfaces, particularly those exposed to mechanical stress, requires careful consideration.
