Contaminants can thus diffuse into the environment and directly impacting the morphological structure of the root as a result of limiting the ability to obtain sufficient water and nutrients necessary for proper plant development. Through the binding of contaminants, these substances are transported from the water-soil system to the root structures of the plant, where they can accumulate over a long period of time and leading to various changes. The primary objective of this work is to map the root system of pine tree in the Protected Landscape Area of Záhorie (PLA Záhorie), using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), to obtain information about the possible movement of contaminants, the shape and structure of the root system or the presence of anthropogenic structures such as pipes or remnants of building materials. GPR is a non-invasive geological investigation method that offers detailed information about the underground distribution of plant roots. Using GPR enables users to gather detailed data on the underground distribution of plant roots, the density of the root system and its quality. Contaminants negatively affect the natural state of roots, which can be reflected in permanent damage, root thickness and size or lack of root growth, which can be detected using GPR. Understanding the interaction between tree roots and contaminants, as well as its consequences, is crucial for environmental risk assessment. Due to its reliability, accuracy, and non-invasive nature, GPR is used in the context of gathering evidence to plan and implement remediation interventions, locating and monitoring the evolution of contamination in soil.
