$a The world is experiencing a demographic transition characterised by an increase in the ageing population. In this context, our research aimed to explore factors that influence life satisfaction as a crucial subjective well-being (SWB) component among Europe's older adults. This study delved into understanding associations between life satisfaction and factors ranging from environmental and housing aspects to macroeconomic and socio- economic variables. Our objective was to explore the complex relationship between human well-being and the natural environment in the relatively vulnerable elderly population. Furthermore, since climate risk, forest proximity––an important forest ecosystem services indicator––and housing are linked in terms of the ecological theory of ageing, a significant part of our focus also revolved around the impact of housing conditions. We utilised data from the eighth wave of the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) dataset (2019/20), which included a sample of 29 104 respondents aged 60 and above, to assess both the emergent and well-established influences on life satisfaction. We employed ordinal least squares (OLS) and two-level multiple regression analysis to analyse the hypothesized associations. The study's findings revealed several patterns. Notably, there were nominal but insignificant tendencies towards increasing life satisfaction with decreasing climate risk and increasing forest proximity, and moderate climate risk was found to have a significant negative correlation with life satisfaction, pointing to possibly non- linear character of the associations. The results showed that forest proximity to dwellings is not a substitute for actively visiting nature and forests as restorative environments. However, ruralness was negatively and significantly associated with life satisfaction. In exploring housing-related factors, we observed that outright homeownership, particularly mortgage-free, as well as larger dwelling size positively influence SWB, reflecting the security and stability such ownership provides. Contrary to expectations, interest rates on home loans did not significantly impact life satisfaction. We noticed the importance of higher psychological self-efficacy and good physical health for SWB. There were no substantial gender differences in SWB but living alone was linked to lower levels of well-being. This study challenges some prevailing assumptions in certain life satisfaction-related domains and enhances the understanding of the multidimensional nature of well-being among older adults in Europe.
