Due to its potential to produce large amounts of biomass yields even on less productive lands, this tree species is especially suitable for marginal sites. Black locust wood is suitable for energy utilization either by direct combustion or by the production of bioethanol via hydrolysis. In this paper the concentrations of carbohydrates in hydrolysates arising at the hot water pre-treatment of black locust wood at 180 °C during 5, 10, 20, 30 and 50 minutes are presented. Saccharides were analysed by the method of high performance liquid chromatography using Benson BP-800 Pb column according to the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) analytical procedure. Maximum yields of carbohydrates were found at the hydrolysis time of 20 minutes (5.25 g×dm−3). In the early stages of the process, mainly polysaccharides are released into the aqueous solutions which are further hydrolysed to monosaccharides. The predominant carbohydrate in solution was D-xylose, which is the main hemicellulose monosaccharide in black locust wood. The concentration of this carbohydrate in solution at 20-minute hydrolysis was 4.03 g×dm−3. 330 $a Agátové drevo je vhodnou surovinou na energetické využitie.
