In order to determine and compare the air permeability of different building board materials, a laboratory test was performed in a pressure chamber. Samples of plasterboard, oriented strand board, cross laminated timber and surface coated oriented strand board with dimensions of 1.2 × 1.5 m have been investigated. Only some samples met the requirement of air permeability q50 < 0.1 m3/ (m2×h). Plasterboard and cross laminated timber boards reached the lowest values in range q50= 0.00005 − 0.07300 m3/ (m2×h). The compact surface structure of the materials causes low air permeability. However, oriented strand boards, most used boards for airtight layers in timber frame construction, reached the highest values in range q50= 0.107 − 1.504 m3/ (m2×h). The investigation covered samples of different thickness from different manufacturers. As main factor of influence, surface structure and orientation of the strands have been detected. Especially the gaps between strands turn out to permit air flow through the board.
