$a Basic fibre characteristic (length, width, swelling and bonding potential) have been assumed to be the source of reduction in strength properties. It is believed that the length of fibre is one of the most useful specifications in providing pulp and paper strength. Fibre is the basic component material in paper manufacturing on which the paper properties depends. Fibre morphological characteristics play a key role to find out the suitability of any wood species or other raw materials for pulp and paper manufacturing. The aim of the present work was to monitor length of pulp fibres from historical documents by Kajaani FS-100 (producer: Kajaani OyElectronics) and to determine type of fibres by microscopy analysis. Fibre length by Kajaani procedure is usually an average value of between 1.000 to 10.000 fibres. The Kajaani procedure is an automated method by which the weighted and arithmetic average fibre length distributions of pulp and paper can be measured. This equipment performs advanced analysis of the properties of the cellulose fibres. It is possible to analysed length and population distribution of fibres in pulp and paper samples. The papers (books from the years 1719, 1784, 1839 and 1853) had been produced from rag pulp fibres (cotton, flax, hemp). Paper from the year 1853 contains (besides rag fibres) soft fibres, too. Paper from the year 1935 was produced from bleached soft pulp and paper form the year 2007 from bleached hard pulp primarily. The largest share of fibres in the paper from the 18th, 19th and 20th century occurs in length range from 0.51 to 0.92 mm. Books from the years 1784, 1835 and 1935 also contain more fibres as evidenced by higher values of the weighted and arithmetic mean of the fibres, respectively.

$a Cieľom tejto práce bolo sledovať zmeny distribúcie dĺžky vlákien vo vzorkách z historických papierových dokumentov pomocou prístroja Kajaani FS 100. Vlákninové zloženie daných papierov sa určilo mikroskopicky.
