    $a In this contribution, there are presented the results of the analyses of the combustion characteristics of biofuels - more concretely, fallen leaves of hardwood deciduous trees. Based on experimental works there has been stated that the relative humidity of the leaf at the time of fall is Wr = 37.9−46.9 %. The average share of individual elements in the combustible is Cdaf = 49.1 %, Hdaf = 6.0 %, Ndaf = 1.2 %, Sdaf = 0.1 %, Odaf = 43.6 %. In the comparison with chemical composition of combustible - wood of deciduous trees the combustible of leaves has 7.5 times higher content of endothermic component - nitrogen. Production of ash from dry leaves of the analyzed plants is Ad = 8.1–13.1 %. From the aspect of ash production leaves are comparable to fossil fuels - brown graded coal. Lower production of ash was observed in leaves of birch (Betula pendula Roth.) with a value Ad = 4.8 %. The higher heating value of dry fallen leaves of hardwood, deciduous trees is between Qs = 16046−19754 kJ×kg−1 and the lower heating value on the lower limit of Qn = 15887−19573 kJ×kg−1. In comparison with dry fuel wood of hardwood deciduous trees the higher heating value of dry leaves is lower by 10.9 % and the lower heating value is lower by 6.5 %. The decline in basic combustion characteristics, i.e. the higher heating value and the lower heating value, is caused in the decisive extent by its high ash content and in small extent by increased content of nitrogen, it means, by the endothermic component in combustible of leaves.
