$a The study of impact of large ungulates on forest land with regard to soil compaction and water infiltration rate was conducted on two locations in the temperate zone of Europe. They were selected in the Bialowieza National Park and the Bialwieza Forest in eastern Poland and the Carpathians (Budča-Boky, the Poľana Region -- Iviny, Topolčianky Game Reserve, and Kováčovské Kopce). The study aimed to investigate the physical and hydrophysical effects of large ungulates on foret soils, as produced by trampling or hoof action, with respect to soil compaction, as well as to estimate the rate of soil recovery. Samples for determination of bulk density, soil particle density, soil porosity, and retention curve were taken from three kinds of plots representing different sites with different degrees of animal disturbnace (high disturbance, intermediate, and undisturbed conditions). From each plot, several soil samples were taken fom two depths (0--5 cm and 5--10 cm). Water infiltration measurements were conducted for determining soil hydraulic conductivity. Also, Electrical resistivity tomography survey was implemented for imaging subsurface of the soils. The data used for evaluating soil bulk density, soil particle density, and soil porosity were analyzed through the ANOVA with Duncan's multiple range test and Wilcoxon matched pair test at P<0.05 and P<0.1, respectively. The results indicated that all soil bulk densities of the highly disturbed areas were higher than those in medium and undisturbed sites. Thus, mean bulk density of the plot Bialowieza Bison Park in the breeding area (1.58 g cm-3) significantly higher than in the undisturbed area (1.18 g cm-3), in opposite, soil porosity in the breeding area (38.5%) significantly lower than (53.5%) in undisturbed area. The mean hydraulic conductivity (2,27.10-2 cm day-1) in the high disturbed area was significantly lower than (3,88.10-2 cm day-1) in the undisturbed area. Water retention significantly lower in the disturbed sites than undisturbed, except in the plot Topoľčianky Bison Park, it is higher in the disturbed site. Electrical resistivity values were higher in the disturbed sites than undisturbed. In the view of considerable forest damage caused by forest game at the present time, our study shows that beside the traditionally recognized damage (such as browsing), degradation of soil physical and hydrophysical properties should be considered when proposing sustainable game management.
