    AnnotationKerstin Hensel is one of the contemporary German writers born in the GDR. Her work presents varied constructions of the comicality and various types of comical protagonists ranging from humorous people on the margins to tragicomic outsiders. Hensel develops a narrative ambiguity in order to create a critical distance to the pattern discussed in the official discourse during the German unification process. This contribution focuses on the texts Im Schlauch and Tanz am Kanal and shows how Hensel plays with and subverts the stigmatizing and stereotypical images of the ‘other’ Germans from the East
