Hron (Slovensko : rieka) Language Slovak Country Slovak Republic systematics 59 Annotation River Habitat Survey and monitoring of Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) were carried out at 19 localities of the Turiec River basin and Hron River in 2008–2009. The otter spraints and sprainting spots were sampled along 600 m stretches of the streams. Bank and channel features were recorded at 10 spot-checks and also continuously along whole the 500 m survey (sweep-up). Principal Component Analysis was used to evaluate hydromorphological data. According to the results of the analysis, the most appropriate features of streams for occurrence of otter are: continuous or semicontinuous riparian vegetation (broadleaf or coniferous), banktop and bankface vegetation structure with 3 – 4 vegetation types. Well-developed bankside vegetation with many exposed banksides, underwater tree roots and presence of large woody debris (LWD) provides suitable cover and breeding places. Localities with concrete banks, reinforced and mud bottom without riparian vegetation are unsuitable habitats for otters Public work category ADF No. of Archival Copy 21142 Catal.org.
