AnnotationThe article discusses the phenomenon of cultural agricultural land abandonment through changes in land development during the first Czechoslovak Republic and after 1945 until now. During the first Czechoslovak Republic in Slovakia was historically the largest grassland area (1 050 118 ha) and arable land (1 942 770 ha). Excessive loading of barren pasture lands by animals gradually rose intensified soil erosion and abandoning of allocated land. This history began derelict farmland. Since that time, the area of agricultural land has declining acreage and forest land (plots) rise. The largest reduction in acreage of agricultural land occurred in during industrialization of Slovakia (1945 - 1985), when there are fewer 307 000 ha. For the years 1945 - 1985 decreased acreage of agricultural land per capita in Slovakia on one half. In the period 1998 - 2006 there was an overall loss of arable land to about 49 084 ha, which is the most in the modern history of Slovakia after its creation in 1993. The lowest index value development of the country (for permanent grassland, arable land and agricultural land) was in the period 1945 -1990, which saw the greatest reduction in the area of agricultural and arable land. Similarly, the highest value of this index has been achieved in this period of forest land, where there has been growth areas
