AnnotationFor the contemporary generation of young people, the term “meme” is not unfamiliar. However, most people have no idea that the meme is not merely a pop-culture phenomenon. In this article we explain the basic theory of memetics, a science which studies mental content. After a brief introduction to the topic, we return to pop-culture memes. We categorize them based on the way they enter the target culture. On selected examples, their genesis and the principles of mutation which enables them to enter different contexts is explained. For this purpose, we employ creative techniques resembling those used in conceptual art. Lastly, we focus on global memes transferred to Slovak from the Internet via interlingual translation, try to interpret them, and evaluate the extent to which the original expression was transferred successfully
