AnnotationThe aim of the paper Developing intercultural competences through service learning is to briefly define the basic concepts such as intercultural education, intercultural sensitivity and intercultural competences / skills and to present the pedagogical strategy of service learning and its possibilities in the development of intercultural competences / skills of students. Ser-vice learning is a way of teaching and learning, where theoretical training is connected with acquiring practical experience. The added value of service learning is that it allows to help others in their natural environment through the created activity. Service-learning activities responds to the needs of education (school), practice (organization) and self-development (students). It enables students and also schools to engage in the development of communities and the region through the solving local and societal problems and to actively contribute to the development of civil society. In this context, towards open societies and trend of more intergenerational social mobility, it is also important to develop intercultural competences. By examples of good practice, it shows innovative approaches to achieving educational goals (according to the standards of education in Slovakia, the paper also deals with the concept of multicultural education, its meaning and goals) by more intensive involvement of students.
