AnnotationThe modified standard IUCN/OSG method for monitoring of the Eurasian Otter (Lutra lutra) population – searching for signs of presence of this species, such as footprints, anal gland secretions and spraints in a network of quadrates – was used for three field censuses of the otter distribution in the Hron river catchment. During each census, 48 quadrates (subdivided into a total of 152 quadrants to achieve higher resolution) of the "Databank of Slovak Fauna (DSF)" were checked. The first mapping was held in winter 1995/1996 and 35 quadrates (72.9 %) were positive and 13 quadrates (27.1 %) negative. The second mapping was carried out in summer and autumn of 2010 (during the third one-off otter mapping on the whole Slovak territory - in all 429 quadrates) when 45 quadrates (93.7 %) were found positive and 3 quadrates (6.3 %) negative. Alike the previous mapping, the third mapping in winter of 2011/2012 resulted in 45 positive and 3 negative quadrates. Results of two regional surveys (2010, 2011/2012) document increase in percentage of positive quadrates and in range occupied by otters in the Hron river catchment compared to that in 1995/1996. The increase is most pronounced in the central part of the catchment. The negative side-effect of the otter expansion is the increase of fish-stock damages in the Hron river and its tributaries as well as in small fishponds located in the catchment. As a consequence, fishpond owners show increasing pressure to promote damage compensation or to get permit for shooting otters.
