    AnnotationThe paper is devoted to Leslie Kish (1910 – 2000), an excellent statistician and one of the pioneers of survey sampling. He was born in Poprad, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in Slovkia. He worked as a statistician and sociologist in several centres of research in the USA (U.S. Bureau of the Census, University of Michigan, etc.). He was one of the founders of the Survey Research Center (University of Michigan), then transformed into the Institute for Social Research at Ann Arbor. His book Survey Sampling published in 1965 remains a classic in the field.
