AnnotationA growing body of research supports the importance of compassion in mental health. Strauss et al. (2016) created a new conceptualization of compassion, which is made up of five dimensions for compassion for self and compassion for others. The aim of our study was to verify the factor structure and internal consistency of the individual dimensions of the Sussex-Oxford Compassion Scales (SOCS-S and SOCS-O) which were developed to measure compassion from an innovative perspective (Gu et al., 2020). Using a confirmatory factor analysis, we tested four theoretical models (5-factor, 1-factor, bi-factor and 4-factor model) for SOCS-S as well as for SOCS-O on a sample of 420 Slovak participants (Mage = 19.5, SD = 3.2, 65.5 % were female). The results supported a 4-factor model of both scales. The dimension of Tolerating discomfort feelings was excluded. The internal consistency of all subscales as well as the total compassion scores were optimal (α, ω> .80).
