Idioms in economic texts and their use in ESP classes / Petra Strnádová. -- Definícia pojmov frazéma/idióm v kontexte slovenského a anglosaského lingvistického systému determinuje ich využitie v ekonomických textoch, najmä čo sa týka funkcie. Študenti na hodinách odborného anglického jazyka môžu preto využiť idiómy ako užitočné obohatenie svojej slovnej zásoby. Vedecký a teda pomerne strohý štýl odborných ekonomických textov je možné čiastočne kompenzovať textami odbornej publicistiky, kde je relatívne vysoká frekvencia výskytu idiómov. Ich ”odľahčujúca“ funkcia je ďalším dôvodom, prečo navrhujeme využitie takýchto textov na hodinách odborného anglického jazyka: stupeň ich odbornosti sa totiž idiómami nijako nenarúša. Práve naopak, vysvetlenie ich významu podporuje zrozumiteľnosť textov, a tiež rýchlosť a kvalitu osvojovania si vedomostí. Definitions of the concepts phraseme/idiom in the context of both Slovak and Anglo-Saxon linguistic systems determine their use in economic texts, mainly regarding their function. For the ESP students, idioms can be an appreciated as useful enrichment of their vocabulary. Scientific and hence rather austere style of scholarly economic texts can partially be compensated by the professional publicist texts where the frequency of idioms occurrence is relatively high. Their ”alleviating“ function is another reason why to use such texts in ESP classes: the degree of their proficiency is not violated by the idioms at all. On the contrary, once explained they enhance comprehensibility of the text and also speed and quality of knowledge acquisition.
