AnnotationThe paper accounts for a comparative content analysis of two official documents shaping the US grand strategy on the onset of the Cold War: the Long Telegram- written by G. Kennan, and the National Security Memorandum – NSC 68. The methodological approach of the analysis itself is based on the theory of realism in international relations. As compared, the analysed documents tried to reflect in different terms the existence of supposed Soviet threats, consequently stressing necessities for the US to react effectively. Since the documents brought rather divergent proposals for action, the paper attempts to point to those content differences which brought to light most significant factual contrasts concerning mainly the assessment of threats resulting subsequently in different recommendations for strategic planners as well as the formation of US national security policy.
