They assume that the process of natural selection shaped our psychological predispositions, which help us to make our moral judgments. However, the process of natural selection did not create these predispositions in a way that they track independent moral truths, but so that they give us the greatest possible chance to survive in our natural and social environment. The aim of the contribution is to critically assess the moral fictionalism of Richard Joyce – a metaethical position according to which we should on the basis that morality is an evolutionary adaptation regard morality as useful fiction and for pragmatic reasons consider our moral statement as true, even though we know that they are all not true. I do not object to the conclusion of moral fictionalism, that we should for pragmatic reasons consider moral statements as true. My point however is that the relationship between evolution and our moral beliefs is not as straightforward as moral fictionalism requires.
