Descr. články - journal articles Language English Country Switzerland Annotation The aim of this paper was to determine the particle size composition of wood dust emission from CNC milling of natural wood and medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and evaluate the associated occupational exposure risks. The paper is focused on some of the most commonly used materials in the woodworking and furniture industry, i.e., solid wood (beech, oak, and spruce) and composite materials (MDF panels). In addition to the influence of the machined material, the effect of the technical-technological parameters, namely, feed speed and depth of cut on the particle size distribution, was also investigated. The selected values of the technical-technological parameters used in this study followed the common work practice in small wood processing companies. The particle size distribution was evaluated by using sieve analysis of samples from the total mass of collected wood dust. The results demonstrated that machining of natural wood is characterized mostly by the formation of coarse dust fractions (2 mm–1 mm sieves), whilst the processing of MDF was associated with generation of fine dust fractions with a size below 100 m. The results obtained can be used for optimizing the technological programs of CNC milling machines, thus, reducing the occupational exposure to harmful wood dust emissions in the wood-processing industry. Za účelom selektovania percentuálnych podielov jednotlivých frakcií (0.032; 0.063; 0.08; 0.125; 0.250; 0.5; 1; 2 mm) vzoriek drevného prachu sa vzorky sitovali na automatickom vibračnom sitovacom stroji Retsch AS 200 control. Najpočetnejšie percentuálne podiely prachových častíc (v rozpätí 50 až 79%), u všetkých vzoriek drevného prachu, boli frakcie 32 μm a ˂ 32 μm (dno). Najpočetnejší percentuálny podiel vytvára predpoklady rizika nadýchania sa respirabilných zložiek obsiahnutých vo frakcii ˂ 32 μm a potenciál tvorby pracho-vzdušnej výbušnej zmesi. Dust is generated as a byproduct based on the method of machining. The paper deals with granulometric analysis of selected samples of wood dust sessile oak (Quercus petraea Liebl.) and from deciduous multiple-pore wood there was chosen European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and alder (Alnus glutinosa L.) and the mixture taken directly from timber production of grinders SCM SANDYA 300RCS) for the purpose of selecting the percentages of the various fractions (0.032; 0.063; 00:08; 0.125; 0.250; 0.5; 1; 2 mm) of samples of wood dust. Wood dust samples were made using a hand orbital sander BOSCH PSS 200AC and sizing on the automatic mesh vibratory sieve machine Retsch AS 200 control. The most frequent percentages of dust particles (between 50-79 %) in all samples of wood dust there were fractions of 32 and less than 32 mu m (bottom). The most abundant percentage creates conditions of the risk of inhaling and respirable components contained in the fraction over 32 mu m and the potential of formation of a dust-air explosive mixture. Comparison of results granulomertic fractions contribution of wood sanding dust typically processed wood in the furniture industry (beech, oak, spruce, fir, and alder) was significantly confirmed of the particle size. The most common particles for sanding are particles on sieve 0.032 mm 51.07 % and for milling process on sieve 0.5 mm 32.83 %. In sanding process there were registered particles smaller than 0.032 mm with the share of 9.48 %. The percentage share of particles smaller than 0.1 mm is dfferent for these two processes, 89.21 % for sanding and 3.48 % for milling. From the hygienic point of view the particles were divided into inhalable, thoratic and alveolic on the basis of curves of residues. In the sanding process there were registered inhalable (cca 85 %) and thoratic (cca 9 %) particles and in the milling process only inhalable particles (cca 3 %).
