AnnotationOBJECTIVES: The paper aims to identify the origins and nature of supervision in social work and its gradual development in the context of professionalization following a historical analysis based on the Anglo-American tradition. THEORETICAL BASE: The formation of supervision is rooted specifically in the period of aid institutionalization. The process of social work professionalization built the profession on a solid base and has become a supporting pillar of supervision. METHODS: The paper is designed as historical research using content analysis of historical texts. OUTCOMES: The history of supervision dates back to the beginnings of charitable organizations. The history of supervision in social work shows that supervision has developed alongside the social work profession. Supervision between the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century was characterized by administrative and educational function, followed by supportive function. The authors found that in the examined period there was no differentiation between student supervision and supervision for social workers. SOCIAL WORK IMPLICATIONS: The results presented herein enrich the social work historical platform and offer answers to questions arising in connection with the history of supervision in social work.
