AnnotationThe global environmental changes have already crossed some of the ecological boundaries of the Earth´s life support systems. Numerous driving forces of this development include also a low reflection of the enormous structural and behavioral complexity of living systems. To contribute to strivings to cope with a high ecosystem complexity and dynamics we have found supportive several important findings of the theory of system ecology, mainly non-equilibrium thermodynamics of complex adaptive systems within the framework of the Holling´s adaptive development cycle. Non-equilibrium thermodynamics and Holling´s cycle help us to explain ecosystem development and evolution from a strictly system point of view. They emphasise also a high ecological significance of natural disturbances of ecosystems, which participated in the evolution of ecosystems and from the long-term view even contributed to their resilience. This provides a new system framework within which we tried to contribute to ecosystem integrity assessment and to derive key principles of ecosystem management. Finally, non-equilibrium thermodynamics of living systems may be also helpful in determining the emergency of the current environmental crisis and in redefining the road to sustainability

AnnotationThe presented contribution in its first part summarizes several important theoretical findings of the system ecology supporting non-equilibrium paradigm of complex adaptive systems. We emphasise the concept of non-equilibrium thermodynamics of living systems and the Holling’s adaptive cycle of a social-ecological system. In natural forests, the phases of an adaptive cycle fit to a substantial extent also to stages and phases of a large and a small forest cycle, although there is a different terminology. Further, we have emphasised the natural role of disturbances and their explanation from the thermodynamic point of view – as an important component of an adaptive cycle, which supports conclusions that these natural phenomena not only participated in the evolution of the whole habitats, but from the long-term view, they may even increase the resilience and overall ecological stability of ecosystems. Finally, we have tried to apply the findings of the theories presented to derive or underlie several principles of the management of temperate deciduous and mixed natural forests, which we consider important

AnnotationThe contribution summarizes some basic notions of ecological complexity theory, as a foundation for the concept of ecological integrity, a new tool for evaluation of ecosystem, landscape and biosphere ecological health. We deal with theoretical, methodological and practical aspects of ecological complexity and we analyse several indicators suitable for quantification of its functional, vertical dimension. This important pillar of ecosystem´s and landscape´s complexity can be effectively indicated by means of quantification of variables connected with solar energy dissipation and with change of temperature of the ecosystem surface. Then ecological integrity can be specified as an inversion of its ecological distance to ecocomplexity of the referential (authentic) natural ecosystems and landscapes
