AnnotationWe extend relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and meson–baryon coupling constants dependent on the scalar field σ, including hyperons and (1232)baryons, to incorporate a possibility of the charged ρmeson condensation in neutron star matter. The influence of the ρ−condensation on the equation of state proves to be strongly model dependent. In our models of one type (KVORcut-based ones) the ρ−condensation arises by a second-order phase transition above a critical density and the maximum value of the neutron star mass diminishes only slightly. The matter composition changes more significantly. In our models of other type (MKVOR*-based ones), if the system is considered at fixed density, the ρ−condensation arises by a second-order phase transition at the baryon density n =n(II)c,ρand at a slightly higher density n =n(I)c,ρthere occurs a first-order phase transition. In a neutron star matter starting with a density n <n(II)c,ρthere appears a region of a mixed phase, or the system is described by Maxwell construction, that results in a substantial decrease of the value of the maximum neutron star mass. Nevertheless in the models under consideration the observational constraint on the maximum neutron star mass is fulfilled. Besides, in MKVOR*-based models the appearance of the ρ−condensate is accompanied by a strong rearrangement of the matter composition. Dependence of the results on a choice of the ρmeson scaling functions for the effective ρmeson mass and coupling constants is also investigated

AnnotationExploiting a stiff equation of state of the relativistic mean-field model MKVORHf with sigma-scaled hadron effective masses and couplings, including hyperons, we demonstrate that the existing neutron-star cooling data can be appropriately described within “the nuclear medium cooling scenario” under the assumption that different sources have different masses

AnnotationKnowledge of the equation of state (EoS) of cold and dense baryonic matter is essential for the description of properties of neutron stars (NSs). With an increase of the density, new baryon species can appear in NS matter, as well as various meson condensates. In previous works, we developed relativistic mean-field (RMF) models with hyperons and Δ -isobars, which passed the majority of known experimental constraints, including the existence of a 2 M ⊙ neutron star. In this contribution, we present results of the inclusion of ρ − -meson condensation into these models. We have shown that, in one class of the models (so-called KVOR-based models, in which the additional stiffening procedure is introduced in the isoscalar sector), the condensation gives only a small contribution to the EoS. In another class of the models (MKVOR-based models with additional stiffening in isovector sector), the condensation can lead to a first-order phase transition and a substantial decrease of the NS mass. Nevertheless, in all resulting models, the condensation does not spoil the description of the experimental constraints

Annotation© Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.Knowledge of the equation of state of the baryon matter plays a decisive role in the description of neutron stars. With an increase of the baryon density the filling of Fermi seas of hyperons and Δ isobars becomes possible. Their inclusion into standard relativistic mean-field models results in a strong softening of the equation of state and a lowering of the maximum neutron star mass below the measured values. We extend a relativistic mean-field model with scaled hadron masses and coupling constants developed in our previous works and take into account now not only hyperons but also the Δ isobars. We analyze available empirical information to put constraints on coupling constants of Δs to mesonic mean fields. We show that the resulting equation of state satisfies majority of presently known experimental constraints.

AnnotationWe propose the existence of a lower bound on the energy of pure neutron matter (PNM) on the basis of unitary-gas considerations. We discuss its justification from experimental studies of cold atoms as well as from theoretical studies of neutron matter. We demonstrate that this bound results in limits to the density-dependent symmetry energy, which is the difference between the energies of symmetric nuclear matter and PNM. In particular, this bound leads to a lower limit to the volume symmetry energy parameter S 0. In addition, for assumed values of S 0 above this minimum, this bound implies both upper and lower limits to the symmetry energy slope parameter L ,which describes the lowest-order density dependence of the symmetry energy. A lower bound on neutron-matter incompressibility is also obtained. These bounds are found to be consistent with both recent calculations of the energies of PNM and constraints from nuclear experiments. Our results are significant because several equations of state that are currently used in astrophysical simulations of supernovae and neutron star mergers, as well as in nuclear physics simulations of heavy-ion collisions, have symmetry energy parameters that violate these bounds. Furthermore, below the nuclear saturation density, the bound on neutron-matter energies leads to a lower limit to the density-dependent symmetry energy, which leads to upper limits to the nuclear surface symmetry parameter and the neutron-star crust–core boundary. We also obtain a lower limit to the neutron-skin thicknesses of neutron-rich nuclei. Above the nuclear saturation density, the bound on neutron-matter energies also leads to an upper limit to the symmetry energy, with implications for neutron-star cooling via the direct Urca process

AnnotationWe extend the relativistic mean-field models with hadron masses and meson-baryon coupling constants dependent on the scalar sigma field, studied previously to incorporate Delta(1232) baryons. Available empirical information is analyzed to put constraints on the couplings of Delta s with meson fields. Conditions for the appearance of Delta s are studied. We demonstrate that with inclusion of the Delta s our equations of state continue to fulfill majority of known empirical constraints including the pressure-density constraint from heavy-ion collisions, the constraint on the maximum mass of the neutron stars, the direct Urea and the gravitational baryon mass ratio constraints. AnnotationThe equation of state of cold baryonic matter is studied within a relativistic mean-field model with hadron masses and coupling constants depending on a scalar field. We demonstrate that if the effective nucleon mass stops to decrease with a density increase at densities n > n > n0, where n0 is the nuclear saturation density, the equation of state stiffens for these densities and the limiting neutron star mass increases. The stabilization of the nucleon mass can be realised if in the equation of motion for the scalar mean-field there appear a term sharply varying in a narrow vicinity of the field value corresponding to the density n . We show several possible realizations of this mechanism getting sufficiently stiff equations of state. The appearance of hyperons in dense neutron star interiors is accounted for. The obtained equations of state remain sufficiently stiff if the reduction of the ϕ meson mass is incorporated. Thereby, the hyperon puzzle can be resolved

AnnotationWe study viscosity of the neutron star matter and $r$-mode instability in rotating neutron stars. Contributions to the shear and bulk viscosities from various processes are calculated accounting for in-medium modifications of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. A softening of the pion mode at densities larger than the nuclear saturation density $n_0$ and a possibility of the pion condensation at densities above $3/,n_0$ are included. The neutron-neutron and proton-proton pairings are incorporated, where necessary. In the shear viscosity we include the lepton contribution calculated taking into account the Landau damping in the photon exchange, the nucleon contribution described by the medium-modified one pion exchange, and some other terms, such as the novel phonon contribution in the 1S$_0$ superfluid neutron phase, and the neutrino term in the neutrino opacity region. The nucleon shear viscosity depends on the density rather moderately and proves to be much less than the lepton term. On the contrary, among the terms contributing to the bulk viscosity, induced by the delay of the relaxation of lepton concentrations in the star matter perturbed by the $r$-modes, the term from the two-nucleon medium modified Urca reactions possesses strongest density dependence (rising by several orders of magnitude for massive stars) because of the pion softening. Also, contributions to the bulk viscosity arising from other reactions induced by charged weak currents, e.g., in the Urca processes on a pion condensate and in direct Urca processes, are included. The radiative bulk viscosity induced by charged and neutral weak currents in the region of the neutrino transparency of the star is also calculated accounting for in-medium effects. We exploit the equation of state, which is similar to the Akmal-Pandharipande-Ravenhall equation of state up to $4/,n_0$, but is stiffer at higher densities, producing the maximum neutron star mass compatible with observations. The direct Urca processes do not appear up to $5/,n_0$ (corresponding to the star mass $M/simeq 1.9 M_{/odot}$). Computed with account of in-medium effects, the frequency boundary of the $r$-mode stability for the stars with the mass $/gsim 1.8 M_{/odot}$ proves to be above the frequencies of all rotating young pulsars. However, none of the conventional contributions to the viscosity are able to explain the stability of rapid rotation of old recycled pulsars in X-ray binaries. To solve this problem we propose a novel efficient mechanism associated with the appearance of condensates of low-lying modes of bosonic excitations with finite momentum and/or with an enhancement of the inhomogeneous pion/kaon condensates in some parts of the star, if the angular velocity exceeds a critical value
