Descr. kapitoly v knihe - book chapters Language English Country Switzerland Annotation Urban and suburban areas represent a specific environment supporting the development of particular terrestrial and aquatic communities. Excluding streams and rivers, most water bodies in the urban areas are man-made, created for various purposes (e.g. decoration, recreation, gravel excavation, irrigation). Rather extreme ecosystems are the city fountains that have been usually overlooked in limnological studies. Despite the extreme environmental variables, especially water pH, temperature, turbulence, disinfection and cleaning activities, which make them inhospitable for many organisms, fountains do sustain a development of specific invertebrate communities, particularly insects, including a dipteran family Chironomidae. Studies dedicated to this unique man-made ecosystem are scarce. Those carried out indicate that fountains can harbour both very diverse chironomid communities (e.g., in Europe), but they can also be extremely species poor (e.g., in South America). The typical fountain community consists of common taxa with very wide ecological requirements together with rare species living in specific habitats, such as water distribution systems, hygropetric- and terrestrial habitats. The many new records found in fountains of countries with well-known chironomid faunas (e.g., Denmark and Czech Republic) further emphasize the importance and peculiarity of fountains. City fountains, as extreme habitat as they are, still represent very important shallow water bodies acting as a source of biodiversity in the urban areas and deserve more attention. In this chapter we (1) review the literature dealing with fountain biota and (2) bring new data from this specific habitat in the Balkans (Osijek and Varaždin, Croatia). Tibetská náhorná plošina - (Tibet) Language English Country Australia systematics 574 Annotation The fast increase in temperature on the Tibetan Plateau, with anticipated future changes in aquatic ecosystems and biodiversity, highlights the urgent need for ecological data on the sparsely studied Tibetan running waters. In the present study we surveyed eight Tibetan streams to obtain data on densities, feeding selectivity and trophic position of the stone loach Triplophysa. Benthic algae, detritus, macroinvertebrates and fish were quantified and collected for stable isotope and stomach content analysis. Triplophysa density (mean 0.70 individuals m(-2), maximum 1.6 individuals m(-2)) decreased with altitude and increased with the percentage cover of fine substratum. Glacier-fed sites tended to have the lowest fish densities, whereas the highest densities were found near lakes. Mean fish length (4.1-9.6 cm) was positively related to the percentage cover of coarse substratum. Triplophysa was omnivorous, but the composition of the stomach contents varied greatly between sites and among individuals. Algal matter was ingested at most sites, but macroinvertebrates (Chironomidae, Baetidae and Simuliidae) dominated the ingestion (average 50-100%). The trophic position of Triplophysa, identified from delta N-15 (%) of the biota, varied between 2.6 and 4.2 among localities (mean 3.6) and was inversely related to the biomass of benthic algae, but unrelated to quantities of other potential food sources.
