AnnotationThe paper analyzes a unique information source on the slave trade in the Caucasus in the early 19th century – a list of slaves transported from Gelenzhan Kale (modern name Gelendzhik) to Istanbul. The list was compiled after the Turkish vessel was seized by the Russian military corvette “Krym”, a unit in the Black Sea Fleet. The list of names was uncovered in the State Archives of the Krasnodar Krai (GAKK), Krasnodar, Russia, and is introduced as a subject for scientific research for the first time. The paper also used the documents of the Central State Historical Archives of Georgia, Tbilisi, Georgia. The methodological basis of the paper is formed by principles of historicism and objectivity, customary for this kind of research, as well as analytical, probabilistic, statistical and comparative methods. At the end, the authors note that the slave trade was the most profitable business in the North-West Caucasus, and prisoners captured in Russia accounted for about 20% of Circassian exports in the early 19th century.

AnnotationThe aim of this study is to clarify evolution of life and traditions of Circassian society in a historically comparative perspective. It is based on published travelogues and diaries of European travellers who visited various parts of Caucasian Circassia from the 16 th century to the half of the 19 th century. Although they had described various aspects of life of this varied mountain ethnic group, the study focuses on just a few of them: anthropological appearance, language, religion, clothing, traditions, social activities and social structure of the Circassians. This data shows that Circassia embodied tribal formation that was split, speaking different languages without existence of any mutual language of interethnic communication. Despite this fact, different tribes had been somehow connected. This variedness was based on the Circassians mentality and religious issues as well. Isolation of the Circassia area, underdevelopment of external relations, absence of migration processes an

AnnotationThe war was a real test for units of the Russian army. The surprise of the invasion of the enemy, the limited military contingent, the presence of the "fifth column", and the uprising of a part of the local population made the conduct of hostilities more complicated. As materials, there were involved the work "Collection of information on the losses of the Caucasian troops", documents of the ACAK, sources of personal origin, as well as pre-revolutionary literature. In addition, the foreign and Russian scientific publications on the topic of research published in recent years were used too. In the solution of research tasks there were used the traditional scientific methods of analysis, synthesis, concretization, generalization. The statistical method was of great importance in the article. With the help of it there were calculated the ratio of killed to wounded and average daily losses of Russian troops during the Russian-Persian war. There was also applied the historical-comparative method, which allowed authors to compare the losses with other military conflicts of this time, for example, with the Russian-Turkish and Caucasian wars. In conclusion, the authors stated that the Russian-Persian war by the ratio of casualties (killed, wounded, prisoners) is one of the most severe wars of the Russian Empire in the XIX century. During the conflict in 8 of the 18 clashes, the Russian army suffered losses of prisoners. The duration of the conflict was 604 days, and the losses of killed, wounded and prisoners-3967 people. The average daily losses on the Caucasian theater of operations were as follows: 2, 5 persons killed, 1, 8 persons wounded and 2, 2 prisoners. The total loss was 6, 5 people per day. However, these losses do not reflect the losses from epidemics and disease.
