Annotation© Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons. We formulate a baseline model for the net-proton number fluctuations in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions. Our model includes total baryon number conservation, fluctuations of the participating nucleon number, limited acceptance, and a possibility that isospin is remembered by the participating wounded nucleons. Most importantly, we formulated the model as consisting of two components: wounded nucleons and the produced nucleon-antinucleon pairs. Those two components have different rapidity distributions. Owing to this feature we obtain also predictions for the rapidity dependence of the cumulants of the net-proton number distribution and their ratios.

AnnotationTwo scenarios for cluster production have long been discussed in the literature: (i) direct emission of the clusters from a (grand-canonical) thermal source or (ii) subsequent formation of the clusters by coalescence of single nucleons. While both approaches have been successfully applied in the past it has not yet been clarified which of the two mechanisms dominates the cluster production. We propose to use recently developed event-by-event techniques to study particle multiplicity fluctuations on nuclear clusters and employ this analysis to the deuteron number fluctuations to disentangle the two production mechanisms. We argue that for a grand-canonical cluster formation, the cluster fluctuations will follow Poisson distribution, while for the coalescence scenario, the fluctuations will strongly deviate from the Poisson expectation. We estimate the effect to be 10% for the variance and up to a factor of 5 for the kurtosis of the deuteron number multiplicity distribution. Our prediction can be tested in the beam energy scan program at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider as well as experiments at the GSI Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research and the Nuclotron-based Ion Collider Facility.

AnnotationWe propose to use the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test to uncover non-statistical differences between events created in heavy ion collisions within the same centrality class. The advantage of the method over other approaches which are currently in use, is that it is sensitive to any difference between the events and is not restricted to simple moments of the distribution of hadrons. The particular application examined here is the identification of the fireball decay due to spinodal fragmentation and/or sudden rise of the bulk viscosity.

AnnotationWe compare multiplicities as well as rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of protons, pions and kaons calculated within presently available transport approaches for heavy-ion collisions around 1 A GeV. For this purpose, three reactions have been selected: Au+Au at 1 and 1.48 A GeV and Ni+Ni at 1.93 A GeV.
