AnnotationPonds are recognized as habitats of high biodiversity hosting many threatened freshwater species. They comprise a major part of the continental waters in Europe. Conservation strategies for abundant habitats like ponds inevitably call for the prioritization of the sites with the highest conservation value. In conservation planning, environmental surrogates are frequently used as proxies, providing readily available environmental information that adequately represents the biodiversity features of target systems. However, environmental surrogacy has mostly been tested in the terrestrial realm. Here, we provide a first attempt to test the efficiency of environmental surrogates for the conservation prioritization of pond communities. Native and alien helophytes and hydrophytes were surveyed in 92 ponds in Central Europe. We combined the flexible regression tree approach with predictive modelling to test the efficiency of local and regional environmental surrogates in targeting pond habitats with a high conservation value. Among the candidate variables, the trophic state and connectivity emerged as the most promising surrogates for native species diversity. However, the predictive performance of the surrogate schemes was relatively weak, providing low support for use of environmental surrogacy in pond conservation planning. If the preservation of hydrophyte diversity is considered a legitimate conservation goal, easily accessible GIS data on connectivity may save costs and effort during the prioritization of hydrophyte hotspots. In the cases of other groups, detailed botanical surveys are necessary to make informed decisions on pond conservation. The occurrence and diversity of alien macrophytes was difficult to predict using the native species diversity or habitat characteristics of the ponds. A failure to identify surrogates for alien species and their strong potential impact on resident ecosystems implies that further monitoring of exotic plants in ponds is urgently needed, especially now, as the number of alien aquatic plant species steeply increases in Europe

AnnotationAquatic vegetation of the mountains and sub-alpine ponds in the Tatra Mountains and adjacent area (Slovakia) has been studied with the aim to provide information about the composition and species richness of macrophytes in relation to environmental factors. Macrophytes were studied in two pond groups: natural ponds of glacial origin and artificial ponds. Simultaneously, eight environmental variables were measured or estimated at each pond. The studied pond groups differed significantly (Mann-Whitney U-test, P<0.01) in almost all recorded environmental variables except for water temperature and pond area. Almost all environmental characteristics showed higher variability in the artificial ponds. In total, 70 macrophyte taxa were found at the study sites consisting of ca 90% of vascular plants and ca 10% of bryophytes. Artificial ponds were characterised by a multi-element vascular plant species group typical for marshy and aquatic habitats of lower altitudes, while Carex rostrata was the only species typical for natural ponds. Species richness differed significantly between the two pond groups, with artificial ponds hosting considerably more species. Species richness of all studied ponds was negatively correlated with altitude and precipitation; a positive relationship was found with water pH and conductivity, air temperature, and degree of human impact. The species composition of ponds was affected mainly by precipitation and human impact.

AnnotationThe information on both the catchment land use and catchment area has the potential to be adopted into the conservation and management of ponds. There have been, however, few attempts to describe the effects of land use acting at various spatial scales on ponds and the studies were restricted to specific categories of ponds. This paper presents a study on 92 ponds distributed over a broad range of environmental conditions in Central Europe. We combined an extensive field survey and a detailed analysis of sediment and water chemistry with GIS-derived data to estimate the relationship between the area of the ponds and the area of their catchments, and to assess the relationship between pond physicochemical conditions and land use across multiple spatial scales. Relating the area of ponds to the area of their catchments, we found a significant positive relationship (r = 0.72). Considering land use effects on pond conditions, catchment-scale land use was the only significant spatial extent
