AnnotationThe presented paper takes a look at Pavel Vilikovský’s (1941 – 2020) novella Fleeting Snow (2014). It adopts the lens of reception theory and demonstrates the use of the so-called textual gaps and places of indeterminacy (Wolfgang Iser, Wolf Schmid). The selected literary text is specific mainly for its composition and narrator. The story is divided into short and concise segments marked with a number and a letter: The number expresses the theme, the letter the sequence of narration. The textual gaps can be identified at the level of composition, narrator, and metaphor. The reader has to homogenise the heterogeneous elements involved in the production of meaning at the level of narration and composition of the text. However, this does not mean that the reader can identify and remove all textual gaps: these remain objects of reflection even after reading the entire text. The aim of this article is to (1) demonstrate how places of indeterminacy can be understood in a specific literary text, (2) determine which parts of Fleeting Snow can be considered as places of indeterminacy, and (3) determine which places of indeterminacy present the key issues, topics, and aspects of the text.

AnnotationReception theory deals with the reception of literary text itself as well as its effect on a potential reader. On one hand, the reception aesthetics examines how readers in different historical situations react to a literary text, and thus deals with real readers whose reactions point to a certain historically conditioned literary experience. On the other hand, Wolfgang Iser's Theory of the Aesthetic Response observes the impact of a literary text on its implied reader and how it provokes a reaction. The aim of this study is to emphasize (in some moments) the variously used and applied theoretical and philosophical starting points in Wolfgang Iser's reception aesthetics and the reception theory of Hans-Robert Jauß.

AnnotationIn her literary work Vanda Rozenbergova often uses the motif of genera-tional inversion. In her literary texts adult characters often are not adults, as a result of which children characters have no room to be children. The writer frequently uses reverses roles, especially in the way of portraying children as adults, who bear a certain degree of responsibility for their lives and the lives of their loved ones in their sur-roundings. It is no different in the novel Man out of Pit, Children out of Love, in which the character of the father is portrayed as an antihero, a weirdo who during the day does nothing but sits in a deep couch pit, from which he plays video games. However, the character of a father trapped in a couch pit is also used as a metaphor for the lone-liness that the whole family falls into after the tragic death of the mother.

AnnotationAccording to the theories of Wolf Schmid, Wolfgang Iser and Roman Ingarden, the presented paper follows the ways in which the reader is forced to reveal the logic of the story's selectivity in the reception process. Interest is mainly placed on different narrative gaps, the so-called places of indeterminacy, which trigger literary communication. Various theories of narrative gaps and text negations are demonstrated in Julian Barnes’s novel The Sense of an Ending (2011) depicting the story of four young men – old high-school friends – who have to deal with the death of their close one. The author chooses an interesting form of story composition and represents the literary text as a fraction which the reader concretizes and defines. This way the reader is able to decipher even those event components that are not explicitly present in the text and they call for different acts of reception.
