Banská Štiavnica (Slovensko) Form. Descr. články - journal articles Language English Country Poland Annotation The area of Sedem Žien tailing pond and the nearby Šobov hydroquartzite quarry affected by mining activity were investigated by geochemical and mineralogical methods to determine the contaminating chemical compounds and study their availability. The degradation of the hydrothermal base mineralisation (galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite) and of fine-grained pyrite oxidation, which forms impregnations in hydroquartzite produce AMD. The area is acidified and the country components (soil, rock, water) are contaminated mainly by Pb, Zn and Fe. The tailing pond dam forming soils show acid pH (2.28 – 3.25), whereas the soil on the tailing pond surface is close to neutral pH (7.26). The availability of the metals from the soil is up to 75 %. The AMD from the hydroquartzite quarry is in comparison with those percolating the tailing pond sediments very acid (pH 2.71) and contains high concentration of metals (Fe 311 mg.L-1, Zn 1690 µg.L-1, Cu 890 µg.L-1, Pb 126 µg.L-1). Isotopic measurements show meteoric origin of the waters Public work category AEC No. of Archival Copy 46405 Catal.org. Oxidation causes acidification of the water and the release of heavy metals. In the article are presented results of the biomass fly ash application for heavy metals removal from acid mine drainage water. Three types of biomass ash were used. Two of used ashes were fly ashes from the heating plant combusting biomass (fly ash from the bag filter and fly ash from the mechanical separator) and the third was the biomass ash from domestic combustion of beech and oak wood. Analysed acid mine drainage water contained high concentrations of metals Fe (753 mg.L-1), Mn (16.2 mg.L-1), Zn (2.46 mg.L-1) and had low pH (2.4). Various doses of fly ashes (1 g, 5 g, 10 g, 20 g) were reacting with acid mine drainage water during 4 hours. The pH of acid mine drainage water was controlled by increasing dose of the fly ash and with increasing time of reaction. The best results were obtained with use of plant fly ash from the bag filter which increased pH of the water to 8.1. Application of this fly ash was effective in removal of all analysed metals from the water. When using other two tested fly ashes increase of concentrations of some metals occurred Public work category AFD No. of Archival Copy 37045 Catal.org.
