AnnotationWater quality assessment and its monitoring are necessary for areas of mining activities. In Malaysia, the mining industry is the backbone of the manufacturing and construction sectors. This study used spatio-temporal water quality modeling along a reach with mining activities during high and low discharges at Sungai (river) Lebir and Sungai Aring, situated in Gua Musang, Kelantan, Peninsular Malaysia. The objective was to assess the spatio-temporal environmental impact of mining activities during the wet and dry seasons. Data were collected at different locations along the reach. Point and non-point sources were near the mining site. Overland flow calculation at the mining site was found with the widely used SCS (Soil Conservation Service) curve number method. Several scenarios were analyzed, such as baseline, worst-case, and with-mitigation. The study revealed that baseline values of all parameters were either in a natural condition or slightly polluted, except for aluminum. All parameters were estimated at a high concentration from the mining site to downstream during the worst case of the wet season. Whereas, during the worst case of the dry season, no significant differences were observed compared to baseline values. In the with-mitigation scenario, parameter concentrations were improved and similar to baseline values. Overall, the scenario selection was helpful in the environmental impact assessment. Furthermore, this study will be significant in pre- and post-mining assessment and environmental clearance.

AnnotationThe analyzed sediments were taken from the man-made reservoirs (Velka Richnava, Rozgrund and Vindsachta) located in an area intensively mined for polymetallic ores since the end of the eleventh century (Banska Stiavnica region, Central Europe). The aims of this study were to determine the radioactivity of natural (226Ra, 228Th, 210Pb) and artificial (137Cs and 241Am) radionuclides, compare the radionuclides’ distribution, and indicate the correlation of radioisotopes and their origin related to sediment properties. Two analytical techniques were used. 228Th, 226Ra, 241Am, and 137Cs were measured by means of gamma spectrometry and 210Pb was determined by its daughter radionuclide 210Po using alpha spectrometry. The results showed that the highest mean level of 226Ra (42.6 Bq·kg−1), 228Th (49.7 Bq·kg−1) and 210Pb (75.2 Bq·kg−1) was in the sediments collected from Rozgrund. The radioactivity of 137Cs and 241Am were present at a higher level in the layer related to Chernobyl (1986) accident and nuclear weapon test (1950/1960). The distribution of natural radionuclides was quite similar in all reservoirs. Chemometric analysis confirmed the radionuclides’ origin and correlation between the analyzed parameters.

AnnotationExploitation of ores has surely represented a risk for contamination of environmental matrices for a long time. This paper reports the results of a study concerning soil contamination by heavy metals at Libiola abandoned copper mine (Italy). This deposit has surely got special importance in Italy because of its historical, environmental and mining features. From a historical viewpoint, Libiola deposit was known since Copper Age, with maximum exploitation at the end of the 19th century. Our investigation plan was elaborated in order to characterize the environmental matrices there, and it provided for inspection of the zones (included in the valley of Gromolo stream) which, according to our preliminary studies and according to literature, could be most affected by past mining activity. Within our selected zones, some soils (even cultivated) were collected in order to check their contamination by heavy metals. Results from the analysis of the collected soil samples showed that the conten

AnnotationThe world’s population is concentrated in urban areas. This change in demography has brought land use transformations that have a number documented environmental and landscape-ecological effects. The most consistent and pervasive effect is an increase in impervious surface cover within urban catchments, which alters natural infiltration, runoff of precipitation and hydrology of streams. In addition to imperviousness, runoff from urbanized surfaces as well as municipal and industrial discharges results in increased loadings of contaminants to stream ecosystems. Growing urban areas represent opportunities for ecologists interested in studying disturbance of river ecosystems, soil sealing, and effective landscape management. Water in the urban space has been considered up to now mostly from the perspective of water supply, sewage purification and storm water management, with increasing awareness of the necessity of freshwater ecosystems conservation. However there has been little holistic consideration of the freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems for moderation and control of the hydrological cycle in the city
