AnnotationBased on recent research (Alderson, 2005; Khalifa and Weir, 2009), this study focuses on three areas of reading comprehension necessary for a successful academic career: general L2 EFL reading skills, more specific academic reading skills and critical thinking and reading. The study presents an analysis of quantitative research conducted in 2020, based on a sample of Slovak undergraduate students reading an academic text in English as L2 in EFL CLIL-formatted classes in humanities. The respondents’ general reading skills were analysed in the context of their critical reading skills and academic preparedness. When tested for general reading skills, respondents were asked to identify implicit and explicit information and the gist of the text. Academic abilities were tested via the ability to identify the attributes of an academic text, such as the system of references, rational and logical language and cause-effect type of argumentation, which indicated the author and genre of the text. In order to evaluate participants’ critical skills with a focus on the social aspects of the text, respondents were asked to identify the importance of the text for themselves and for their community and life. The participants’ mean scores and differences in their performances on each task type were compared using descriptive statistics, and multiple analysis of variance. The results suggest that the general reading skills of university undergraduates in Slovakia are adequate, however, more difficulty was encountered with implicit, rather than explicit, tasks. Students also need to improve their critical reading skills and reading for academic purposes. The research outcomes highlight the need to hone the education of future linguists to the new needs of a more text-based society.

AnnotationThe study presents research results solved by project VEGA No. 1/0455/18 named "Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger Learners. We examined the social context of the young readers from Slovak schools. The research sample consisted of 693 younger and 534 older elementary school students. We created specific subgroups of reading level based on the sequential theory resulting from respondents‘ answers in focused interviews: reader enthusiast “A” , reader with interest “I”, non-reader without problems “G”, non-reader with problems “N”. We took into account the respondents' relationship to reading and the level of their reading. Our research instrument (47 items questionnaire) revealed the reader's characters, the social context of their reading, and his/her reading preferences. In this paper we focus on the social context of reading in the comparison of younger and older pupils classified into specific groups. The results of the research show statistical differences in the responses of younger and older pupils. Fewer older than younger pupils say that parents enjoy when he/she is reading. Younger pupils read more than older, and most pupils in both groups do not like to read aloud to classmates. Mothers most often advise what to read in the case of younger children, older students respect more friend when need some advices about reading. Parental authority and sharing of reading interests with parents decreases dependently on the age. Respondents‘ friends replace parents. Teachers in both age groups are advisors for only about 6% of pupils, which is deplorably low. The paper focuses on comparing the social context of reading in the subgroups A I G N. Based on the results of the research, we have formulated our recommendations for developing the reading of students at school and children in the families

AnnotationThis study presents further research results solved by project VEGA VEGA 1/0455/18 - Research and Development of Reading of Younger School Pupils. It follows the results published in the article Social context of child reading in ontogenetic comparison (hereby: Babiaková, S. - Kasáčová, B.). In this text, the social preferences of younger pupils have been compared internationally. There were three research samples of pupils aged 10-11 who attend the 4th year of primary education. The research samples consisted of 693 Slovak children, 254 Czech pupils and 268 Polish pupils. All samples of respondents were divided into four groups according to the reader level by the same strategy. We created specific subgroups of reading level based on sequential theory resulting from respondents´ answers in focused interviews: reader enthusiast “A”, reader with interest “I”, non-reader without problems “G”, non-reader with problems “N ". We focused on comparing Slovak, Czech and Polish children according to how some factors in the social context in three countries correlated the reading of different reading levels. The results show significant differences in the responses of Slovak, Czech and Polish pupils. Less Polish than Slovak pupils say that parents enjoy their reading. Polish pupils less than Slovak and Czech like to read to somebody. Most pupils in all national groups do not like reading aloud in front of the whole class. All groups are most often consulted with their mother when choosing reading, Slovak children are least consulted with their father. They discuss most about their reading experience with their mother, less with their father. Teachers are rarely mentioned as counselors in all national samples. The paper also focuses on the comparison of the social context of reading subgroups: A - reader enthusiast, I - reader with interest, G - reader without problems, N - reader with problems. Based on the results of our research, we tried to find and compare experiences from three countries, SK, CZ, PL and formulate “good experiences” for developing pupils' reading in school and in the family.

AnnotationThe paper deals with the issue of reading enthusiasm of younger learners of 9-10 years of age. This study follows up on two studies presented at the ICERI 2018 in Seville, Spain, "Theoretical Scopes of Support for Younger School-age Learners" and "Reading Enthusiasm of Pupils at Elementary School from the Perspective of Pedagogical Research." The contemporary world involves several factors regarding children’s reading interest. We established a sequential theory on the levels of children's reading maturity based on the characteristics of the reader, the social context of children's readability, and reading preferences. These factors change in the context of time, social development, and cultural and social diversity. The aim of the paper is to present the results of qualitative research on the three factors of reading interest and find out the reading preferences of contemporary Slovak 9-10-year-old learners. In this study we present some results of the VEGA 1/0455/18 research project "Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners." In our research we first analyzed three features of reading enthusiasm. In the process of qualitative research pursued through interviews with learner focus groups we identified three features or factors: 1.) reader’s features, 2.) the social context of readability, and 3.) younger learners' reading preferences. In the second step of research we analyzed in detail the younger learners' reading preferences. The learners’ answers were analyzed qualitatively by way of categorization. We focused on the content, genres, and forms preferred by current Slovak children. These results were compared with the results from similar previous research projects. We identified several sequential grounded theories: 1. Slovak younger learners prefer to read fairy-tales and real-life stories (consistent with the previous research); 2. horror is becoming one of the most preferred genres (different from the previous research); 3. in the center of younger learners' interest are books with mysterious, eerie, and scary stories and stories with explicit resistance to authority; 4. children in contemporary Slovakia prefer especially foreign literature; 5. the image of the preferred literary hero of younger learners has changed.

AnnotationThe study presents theoretical scopes of the research monitoring the actual stage of reading interest and reading enthusiasm of younger school-age learners in international context. The authors analyse the holistic model of reading competency in relation with functional and cognitive concept of international literacy measurements (PIRLS, PISA). The authors search for relations between learners’ literacy levels and reading based on interest. The theoretical research construct is formed by monitored categories of descriptive dimensions such as reading motivation, reading interest, reading enjoyment, reading enthusiasm, emotions within reading, contextual communication. The findings of theoretical research based on comparison of selected research-based interventional programmes supporting reading interest are the part of this study. These findings have formed the resource for the model of programme supporting reading interest of young school-age learners that is going to be verified by experiment in research project the VEGA research project No. 1/0455/18 Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners with the focus on reading enjoyment and positive attitude to reading based on interest.

AnnotationThe paper addresses the topic of a rapid decrease in pupils’ reading enthusiasm in comparison with the past, and follows up on the study Understanding Children´s Development through Research of their Preconceptions about Literacy Phenomena (ICERI 2017, Seville, Spain). We will present the methodological basis of the VEGA research project No. 1/0455/18 Research and Development of Reading Enthusiasm with Younger School-Age Learners done by the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic. Its main objective is an empirical research into the factors influencing the "reading enthusiasm and reading interest" of elementary school pupils, and discovering the indicators for the decrease in their reading enthusiasm with their increasing age. The key research method will be measuring pupils' attitudes towards reading and acquiring opinions and experiences of teachers. Therefore, the preparatory phase uses interviews with pupils to obtain valid semantic categories. In this study, we present the results of the preparatory phase of the research. We have implemented flexible micro-interviews with pupil groups for an initial research. The purpose of the interview survey was to create categories for the subsequent quantitative research. The personal categories included "pupils - readers" and "pupils - non-readers". The interviews helped to identify content categories for the research: "pupil as a reader", "social context of reading and reading enthusiasm" and "reader preferences". The results of the interviews indicate that the topic brought several grounded theories: 1. teachers are not able to reliably identify "readers" among pupils; 2. “pupils - non-readers" read texts which they do not speak about during their lessons, and that's why their teachers cannot identify them, 3. readers' preferences show that "pupils - readers" mainly read adventure books, detective stories, girls' novels, and fantasy stories, while the "pupils - non-readers" mainly read texts from the internet for their homework, text messages, jokes, and books on computers. 4. It turned out that both groups of pupils read texts, which adults do not consider typical for their age. We consider this stage to be a cardinal point for setting up a subsequent quantitative research, and at the same time this stage brought original findings that will be formulated into a theory embedded in the text of this study.
