AnnotationThe paper presents a view of the crowdfunding phenomenon in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, identifying factors that determine the success of non-profits on crowdfunding platforms operating in two (post-) Communist CEE countries in terms of the two-sided market theory. The main finding is that the status of a project creator does not significantly affect the probability of project overfunding, which implies that the projects created by non-profits do not have a higher likelihood of being overfunded, though this may differ between the studied countries

AnnotationIn this chapter we delve into other ways of nonprofi t funding that come from the business world (among them, Chapter 13 will focus on crowdfunding specifi cally). “Research on NPOs becoming business-like has increased continuously since the 1980s, and, in view of recent developments, is more relevant than ever” ( Maier, Meyer, & Steinbereithner, 2016 , p. 78). On the one hand, there is an effort to achieve nonprofi t organization (NPOs) fi nancial independence, which supports the idea of NPOs becoming business-like. On the other hand, there is the frequently stressed ‘non-commercial’ mission and purpose of NPOs, which might seem in contrast to becoming business-like

AnnotationThe present paper discusses the response of the Austrian and Slovak nonprofits to the recent migration crisis. In both countries, nonprofits delivered crucial problem-solving contributions but faced serious challenges related to scaling up, capacity building, and improving coordination. Drawing on the Luhmannian systems-theoretic approach, the paper argues that these challenges gave a boost to the systemic identity of nonprofits. Triggered by the substantial inflows of public money, the systemic identity explains why nonprofits can successfully operate in the polarized societal environment and develop unique expertise which is valuable to the public sector. At the same time, the systemic identity lowers the responsiveness of nonprofits to the societal environment. The major policy implication is that this responsiveness has to be continually improved through rational discourses and stakeholder dialogues.
