(Fremd-)Sprachen im öffentlichen Raum von Banská Štiavnica: Eine Linguistic-Landscape-Studie

Bajusová, Miroslava, 1983- (Fremd-)Sprachen im öffentlichen Raum von Banská Štiavnica: Eine Linguistic-Landscape-Studie = (Foreign) languages in public space of Banská Štiavnica: a linguistic landscape study / Miroslava Bajusová. -- The subject of the study is an analysis of the Linguistic Landscape of one street in the central part of Banská Štiavnica. The town is a favorite tourist destination and area inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It also has a long history closely linked to the German settlement of Slovakia over the centuries. These two points (tourism and globalization on the one hand and history on the other hand) influence the current face of the town in context of the Linguistic Landscape. The object of interest are texts in written form situated in the public space of the Andrej Kmeť Street including “public road signs, advertising billboards, street names, place names, commercial shop signs, and public signs on government buildings” (Landry – Bourhis, 1997: 25). The paper is both quantitative and qualitative. Its purpose is to examine the language-mixture and language-dominance in the selected area and to analyze and describe the relations between the used languages and the reasons of their presence. The research is based on (1) data collection in form of photographs of signs in the chosen area, (2) creation of a database of the taken pictures in a computer, (3) analysis of the database-content and (4) interpretation of the results.
