Vojenský aspekt regionálnej spolupráce v Latinskej Amerike - Juhoamerická rada obrany = Military aspect of regional cooperation in Latin America - the South American Council of defense / Natália Šubrtová. -- The South American Defense Council (Consejo de Defensa Suramericano – CDS) was established in 2009 as a Ministerial Council within the institutional structure of the UNASUR. It became a unique project in the history of South America, whereas no similar mechanisms ever existed before in the region. The Council functions as defense authority and it was created on a proposal of Brazil, with the aim of deepening and promoting dialogue in defense between the Member States of UNASUR. However, already at the beginning, states that primary initiated the establishment of the Council (Brazil, Argentina and Chile) clearly stated that their goal is not to form a military alliance similar to NATO, but to create a common platform which would allow them to promote security cooperation, build up confidence measures, implement joint actions and encourage mutual military industrial exchange.
