Dúbravská, Natália, 1994- The rationality and irrationality factor in the hierarchy of values of literary characters of Leonid Andreyev / Natália Dúbravská. -- The paper explores the antagonism of rationality and irrationality in the value hierarchy of Leonid Andreyev’s literary characters through the prism of Schopenhauerian and Nietzschean philosophies. It analyzes the concept of the will as the focal point of German voluntaristic philosophy and as the main factor affecting the rationality—irrationality dichotomy in Andreyev’s prose and plays. The author of the paper distinguishes between two tendencies related to the concept of the irrational will that can be observed in the writer’s works—one is to let the subconscious will take over the human consciousness by suppressing the rational mind and the other one is to suppress the irrational nature of the will by attempting to consciously rationalize it. The paper demonstrates both approaches based on excerpts from Andreyevʼs short stories The Abyss, My Notes and the play Savva (Ignis Sanat).
