Nie je ochrana ako ochrana, alebo všetkého veľa škodí / Peter Urban. -- Nature protection comprises the protection of landscape, species diversity, nature values and aesthetic qualities of nature, as well as the protection and considerate use of natural resources. It is an applied practical discipline and must be based on scientific knowledges (especially conservation biology), but also on the experience of the best and worst practices. This study gives a brief outline a long process history of nature conservation in Slovakia. The theoretical basis of the legal nature protection has been formed since medieval times. The first acts were mostly concerned with property, with included natural resources and game animals. The present system of nature protection evolved gradually over the past century. In more recent decades, the concept of nature conservation has been evolving from a strict conservation approach to a more active approach that takes into account not only ecological interactions but also economic and socio-cultural aspects. On example of Poľana Mts. (which is a Protected Landscape Area, Special Protected Area, Biosphere reserve, Protected hunting area, Protected water area, etc.) draws attention to – overlapping of different types and categories of protected areas declared for different purposes, requiring different management, without a functional integrated management
