AnotáciaAttempting to help reduce the costs of bioassessment of aquatic habitats, the aim of this study was to estimate how particular substrate types influence the ecological quality evaluation based on a multihabitat scheme proposed by the AQEM/STAR consortium. Samples of macroinvertebrates were taken from the Stupavsky potok brook, a small, 4th order calcareous stream in the Small Carpathians in Slovakia (Central Europe). Eight most suitable metrics for small Slovakian streams forming the Slovak multimetric index on seven substrate types were tested and compared with the multihabitat sample. The Saprobic Index (SI) and Index of Biocenotic Region (IBR) showed considerably worse (higher) values in the psammal and the best (lowest) values on coarse mineral substrates (lithal, akal). Similarly, values of the metrics Oligo (%), BMWP Score, Rheoindex, Rhithron Typie Index (%) and EPT reached their worst (lowest) values on psammal and the best (highest) values on coarse mineral substrates. Psammal sample showed the worst ecological quality expressed by the lowest EQR (Ecological Quality Ratio) value, most significantly differing from the multihabitat sample (Multiple Comparisons of Means: Dunnett Contrasts:8.25, P < 0.01). We conclude that substrate types considerably influence selected metrics. Because of a relatively substantial proportion of psammal in some small Slovakian streams and its marginal influence on the overall ecological quality of the site, we suggest conduct further research addressing the effectiveness of its usage in the water management.

AnotáciaData on benthic macroinvertebrate assemblages of two alpine lakes in the Tatra Mts (Slovakia) collected in 1914, 1933, 1979–1982, 1993–1997, and 2000 were collated and analysed in an attempt to define their relationship to major environmental events affecting these alpine lakes over the last century. The oldest data were considered an important background before the onset of acidification in one of the lakes in the 1950s, while the most current contain possible information on biological recovery. Results show that data from the 1910s are insufficient to characterize the macroinvertebrate fauna. Deep zone assemblages of both studied lakes have remained stable since the 1930s. Changes in the density of dominant species over time were found in the acidified lake, suggesting a connection between an increase in phosphorus and chlorophyll-a concentration. The composition of the littoral assemblages in the acidified lake in the 1930s indicates that the lake was not strongly acidified at that time. A stable composition since the 1980s reflects the ongoing acid stress. Incomplete species data on the non-acidified lake did not allow us to detect possible changes in the littoral fauna related to acidification. Single findings of species indicating a recovery process need longer-term data to confirm such a trend. Results from this study suggest that historical datasets consist of valuable information that can supplement palaeolimnological analyses in the reconstruction of lake ontogeny

AnotáciaInvertebrates inhabiting alpine water bodies are sensitive to environmental variability and lake faunal communities can therefore be important indicators of long-range airborne pollution, climate change and other human impacts. Information about the trophic structure and species composition of alpine lake ecosystems over space and time should therefore give important insights into environmental change effects. To explore the sensitivity of the faunal communities to environmental variability at local and regional scales we sampled biological and environmental variables from alpine lakes in seven different alpine lake districts in six European mountain regions. The fauna of the lakes was mainly composed of oligotrophic/ultraoligotrophic species, predominantly chironomids which made up more than 60% of all individuals. Species accumulation curves were used to explore patterns of species turnover and distribution, and the results indicated strong patterns in species diversity and also environmentally driven patterns in species distributions among lake districts. We used ordination analyses to explore these patterns in more detail. The results showed that the overriding patterns in faunal assemblages were found between the lake districts. Lake-water chemistry appeared to be the major driver of the faunal assemblages at this scale, but altitude and geography could also account for significant fractions of the variability. In addition to these broadscale patterns, repeatable trends in the faunal assemblages could be found in the faunal assemblages within lake districts. At this scale, the strongest compositional trends were found along the altitudinal gradient, but the faunal communities also responded to within- district variability in lake-water chemistry. Lake size or maximum depth did not appear to have any statistically significant effect on the littoral faunal assemblages at either scale

AnotáciaStructure of hydrocoenoses of the streams in the Poloniny National Park were studied during the years 1999 and 2000. Composition of epilithic diatom communities, microzoobenthos, interstitial communities, all the main groups of macrozoobenthos (permanent fauna, Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Diptera) and basic hydrological, abiotic (water chemistry) and biotic (organic matter) factors were studied within two model streams during two years sampling procedure in order to compare hydrocoenoses of streams with different catchment management. We have compared a near pristine East Carpathian stream with a nearby-situated stream with similar stream channel characteristics, but heavily logged catchment. Spatial and temporal differences in food supply, overall species density and taxonomic richness and communities composition were assessed. Temporal changes in FPOM, UFPOM and chlorophyll-a were documented (RM MANOVA; p < 0.05). However, we did not record any spatial differences between corresponding sampling sites of compared streams. Species richness and density of macroinvertebrate communities did not appear to vary spatially or temporally. Nevertheless, some differences have been recorded within species composition of sensitive groups of macroinvertebrates (e.g. stoneflies). Our study did not support expected dramatic effect of silvicultural practices and post logging changes in catchment. Basic faunistic- ecological investigation of particular groups of stream dwelling organisms was performed at some other streams of the Poloniny National Park. Depending on the sampling design at these streams, data on longitudinal distribution, community composition similarity and ecological notes to particular groups of organisms are presented
