    AnotáciaThis study aimed to assess the impact of abiotic chemical stresses in the soil environment (salinization, acidification, inorganic risk elements from the industry) on the chlorophyll content and parameters of chlorophyll fluorescence - effective and maximum quantum yield PSII (yield Y(II) or Fv/Fm test) of Miscanthus x giganteus hybrid. For this objective, graduated doses of stresses, as mentioned above, were applied to a pot experiment's controlled conditions during the growing season 2018. The chlorophyll content of 19.267 CCI units was recorded with the control treatment. However, a significantly higher content of chlorophyll was observed with the examined stressors, especially salinity (25.433 CCI) and acidity (26.500 CCI). Y (II) value ranged from 0.561 to 0.693 and Fv/Fm from 0.689 to 0.775 respectively. There were no significant differences between assessed stressors and control. Miscanthus x giganteus had good resistance to the impact of assessed chemical stresses; damage to the assimilation apparatus of the plants did not occur. The species has the potential and can create the preconditions for cultivation even in a mildly contaminated soil environment, e.g., for reclamation of degraded soils or energy use.

    AnotáciaThe assessment of management effectiveness during the whole life-cycle process of protected areas (PAs) has become increasingly important, due to the lack of holistic background assessment work on management processes leading to a deeper knowledge of sustainable development (SD) principles. This paper aims to serve as a practical guide through a gradation model of integrated protected area management (IPAM) by carrying out an exhaustive trans-dimensional assessment of management effectiveness, identifying a critical field of activities and developing a framework mix of strategic recommendations leading to the implementation of an effective planning process. Our results could aid in the prioritisation of key decisions towards a more in-depth understanding of how to set up a balanced IPAM, as well as to enable managers and decision-makers to focus on activities that can further pre-established aims and reach the goal of five-dimensional sustainability in terms of SD and good governance.

    AnotáciaThe most important current need for environmental education is to support the transfer of knowledge in an effective way in order to provide knowledge, awareness and action that enable people to transform themselves and transform societies. When creating an effective educational milieu, it is crucial to engage learners in an active learning environment. Experiential learning falls within the spectrum of active learning, representing activities that can maintain students' knowledge and understanding for longer and at the same time enable them to apply what they have learned better on a broader scale. Our experiential learning model is based on the method of "The 6 C’s of Education for the 21st century" (Think Critically, Communicate Clearly, Work Collaboratively, Embrace Culture, Develop Creativity, Utilise Connectivity) with an emphasis on creating multiple opportunities for personal reflection in both curricular and cocurricular formats. This educational model encompasses all dimensions of time - past, present and future - because we strongly believe that effective education cannot afford to ignore any of them. The concept of working towards an effective learning space on environmental education and sustainability promotes cooperation and exchange in education amongst all sectors of education, and was developed on the basis of our national and international networks.

    AnotáciaPurpose and possibility of ornamental grasses use in garden and landscape creation is evaluated in this study. We evaluate collection of 40 taxon of ornamental grasses, located in the Grassland and Mountain Agriculture Research Institute (GMARI) area in Banská Bystrica (Slovakia). During the growing season in the years 2013–2018, we evaluated the ecological requirements of ornamental grass species to cultivated environment, their persistence, reproduction, plant height, flowering period, decorative, hibernation success and possibilities of their cultivation in Slovakia. We proposed their use in vegetative arrangements in urban landscape. We assessed the importance of their ecosystem functions and services, we also showed the possible risks and restrictions of their planting (invasive nature, pollen allergens).

    AnotáciaThis paper reports the results of research aimed at assessing the recreational value (in the context of cultural value) of SCI Vtacnik (central Slovakia), which is visited by about 16,000 tourists per year. The questionnaire survey was conducted from April to October 2015. The return rate of the questionnaire was 61.8% (309 respondents) out of 500 distributed copies consisting of 24 questions each. Following the processing of the results using the method of travel costs, with an average duration of stay of 1.38 day and respondents' costs of (sic)51.25 per person/per stay, the total recreational value was calculated at (sic)820.051,2. The overall ecosystem assessment services of the evaluated protected area result from recreational activities estimated at (sic)81.54 when converted to 1 ha of total area of SCI Vtacnik. Recreational value (VTR) just setting off costs directly linked to visits of the protected area is (sic)212.188,8, and in recalculation on 1 ha of the total area a value of (sic)21.10 was obtained.

    AnotáciaThe paper presents an assessment of current activities in the management of two Slovak National Parks in the context of sustainable development dimensions and principles and the life cycle of the fields of activity (FoAs). Our results show footprints of National Park (NP) Poloniny and NP Nízke Tatry (NAPANT) management from the holistic point of view of sustainable development in the 21st century. The assessment indicates that the sustainable development dimensions and principles have not yet been systematically integrated into the management of both evaluated Protected areas (PAs), and there is urgent need to increase the management complexity at FoA level, especially in the planning and networking phases, as an aggregate parameter of the new challenges and related requirements for planning, implementing and managing PAs in the new Millenium. Common features were identified in both evaluated PAs that appear to indicate the necessity for changes in the institutional set-up governing PA management which are, however, not within the power of individual park managers; all these features have, as a backdrop, a marked resistance to change in environmental policy at the national government level in the context of PA management. From the results, authors also draw the conclusion that Integrated Management of PAs (IPAM toolbox) promises to be a valuable instrument in the arsenal of the national institutions tasked with protected area management, enabling them to cope with and achieve satisfactory adaptation to the varying environmental and social factors which characterise the 21st century and thus reach their desired aim in terms of a more efficient and effective park management system
