AnotáciaConservation translocations involve human movement of species to provide a conservation benefit and consist of: reinforcement and reintroduction (indigenous spescies) and conservation introductions (non indigenous species). Several reintroductions of mammals have been carried out in Slovakia during the last 50 years. Reintroduction of the Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica) in the Nízke Tatry Mts. took place in the years 1969–1976. In total 30 chamois individuals were released into the wild during the introduction. At present there are about 100 individuals of Tatra chamois in the in central part of the Low Tatra Mts. Male-biased introgressive hybridization between the back-up Low Tatra population and both non-native Alpine chamois (R. r. rupicapra) populations (introduced to two adjacent mountain ranges – Veľká Fatra and Slovenský raj), was detected using several approaches, with up to 19 % of the genome introgressed from Alpine chamois. Since the second half of the 1990s, European ground squirrel (Spermophilus citellus) has been repatriated to several original sites. In 1995, five individuals of Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber vistulanus) from Poland were reintroduced into the Jelešná brook, near the Orava Water Reservoir. A succesful repatriation of European bison (Bison bonasus bonasus × Bison bonasus caucasicus) line from several European breeds to the Poloniny Mts. National Park took place in 2004–2005. At present, there are the viable bison population, about 40 individuals. From 2008 till 2010, altogether 18 individuals Tatra marmot (Marmota marmota latirostris) from the Western Tatras were released to Belianske Tatry Mts. At present, 6 marmot families live in this mountain range. These five reintroductions can be considered successful. Between 2014 and 2015, five elk individuals (Alces alces) from Latvia and Sweden transferred to Slovenské Rudohorie Mts. Result of this reintroduction is still unknown.
